My Funny Valentine

The history of jazz is nourished by endless melodies, some of them in instrumental format are recreated by multiple big bands, others - with their particular lyric - are reinterpreted by hundreds of singers. Some of them are even icons of certain themes. If we refer to love, without a doubt, one of the great ballads is My funny Valentine. This year meet 75 years of its release, and with a force that only resist the greatest songs, is one of the most recorded and interpreted around the world standard.

An April 14, 1937 premiered the play Babes in arms at the Shubert Theater in Broadway. In the original play a character named Billie Smith - played by Mitzi Green - sings the song to Valentine Val Lamar
.
This work of Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart is one of the quintessential romantic anthems The first recorded version appeared in 1945. Vocalist Ruth Gaylor and Hal McIntyre Orchestra achieved that My Funny Valentine reached place 16 of the chart in just a week.

In the 1950's, the song was performed by the best-known figures of the jazz universe. Some examples, Ben Webster, Bill Evans, Gerry Mulligan, Chet Baker, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Bing Crosby, Miles Davis, Sarah Vaughan, Stan Getz, Paul Desmond, Tony Bennett, Buddy Rich, Anita O'Day, Mel Tormé, Sammy Davis, Jr. and many more.

Have also done so Elvis Costelo, Van Morrison, Carly Simon and Barbra Streisand. Several films had her on their soundtracks: Babes in arms by Judy Garland - the fabulous Backer boys by Michelle Pfeiffer - Ashura by Sting and the talented Mr Ripley by Matt Damon-, among others. (Boletinjazz, April 14 2012).

George Grosman, the uploader of the video to Youtube, says: " little homage to the genius of Ben Webster. The best instrumental version of the Rogers and Hart classic ever!"

I join the tribute because I agree completely.

My Funny Valentine

My funny valentine
Sweet comic valentine
You make me smile with my heart
Your looks are laughable
Unphotographable
Yet you're my favourite work of art

Is your figure less than greek
Is your mouth a little weak
When you open it to speak
Are you smart?

But don't change a hair for me
Not if you care for me
Stay little valentine stay
Each day is valentines day

Is your figure less than greek
Is your mouth a little weak
When you open it to speak
Are you smart?

But don't you change one hair for me
Not if you care for me
Stay little valentine stay
Each day is valentines day.

¡Awesome! After a few days, unable to write two words, I needed to hear a song like My Funny Valentine.
