Hoy he escuchado un album de un grupo que no conocia. No se trata de un grupo nuevo pues ya publicaron su primer album en 1998, y hasta ahora ya han publicado una docena de albumes. En España son poco conocidos, quizás por que salen poco de los Estados Unidos. Me refiero a la banda Drive-by Truckers, que procede de Athens, Georgia, aunque varios de sus componentes son de Alabama.
Su estilo, que ellos denomina, psychobilly, es rock alternativo con cierto sabor a country. Su sonido es muy caracteristico, con tres guitarras, bajo y bateria, pero lo que mas llama la atención son las letras de sus canciones, que hablan de criminales y vagabundos que tratan de sobrevivir en ciudades con fuerte depresión económica. La banda fue fundada por Patterson Hood y Mike Cooley, en el año 1996. Ambos tenian experiencia previa, pues además de pertenecer a familias con tradición musical, habían formado parte de once grupos, comenzando con el proyecto Adam's House Cat.
En su música han tenido gran influencia Lynyrd Skynyrd y Neil Young. Su album Southern Rock Opera del año 2001 tuvo gran éxito y fue muy bien valorado en la revista Rolling Stone. El siguiente album publicado en el año 2002, Decoration Day, fuen también muy aclamado. El álbum es un disco conceptual en el que los personajes de las canciones se enfrentan a duras decisiones, como bodas, incesto, rupturas, venganzas, asesinatos o suicidios.
Le siguió en el año 2004 el album, The Dirty South que, como Southern Rock Opera. explora la naturaleza oscura del Sur de los Estado Unidos.
El album A Blessing and a Curse, lanzado el 18 de abril de 2006. demostró la capacidad del grupo para adentrarse en nuevos territorios, y puede interpretarse como un intento de la banda para sacarse de encima la etiqueta de rock sureño atribuida al grupo por críticos, fans y detractores desde el lanzamiento de Southern Rock Opera. Este disco suena ya menos a Skynyrd, y recuerda más a grupos británicos de rock de principios de los 70 como The Rolling Stones o The Faces.
Posteriormente han publicado, Brighter Than Creation's Dark (2008), Live from Austin (2009), The Fine Print a Collection of Oddities and Rarities (2009), The Big To Dio (2010), y por último English Oceans este año 2014, que me ha dado la oportunidad de conocerlos.
Para presentarlos he seleccionado un video de Youtube con una actuación en directo con el tema Made Up English Oceans, cuya versión, de estudio, está contenida en el album. Me gusta el estilo y el sonido de la banda, pero tendré que oir otros albumes para conocerlos más a fondo.
